Duel Deck

A two-player card duel of pure strategy (Goofspiel). You each hold cards 1–13; prizes are revealed one a round and you secretly bid a card for each — highest bid wins it. It's all mind games: spend big to grab a rich prize, or bluff small and save your aces. Highest total after 13 rounds wins.

How to play

  1. Both players hold the same hand of bid cards: 1 through 13.
  2. Each round a prize card is revealed (worth its number in points).
  3. Secretly choose one card from your hand to bid — your opponent can't see it until both have committed.
  4. The higher bid wins the prize's points; both bid cards are then discarded.
  5. If the bids tie, the player who is behind on score takes the prize.
  6. After all 13 prizes are claimed, the higher total score wins.

Frequently asked questions

What is Duel Deck?
A head-to-head card game of pure strategy (also known as Goofspiel or GOPS): you bid hidden cards to win revealed prizes, highest total wins.
Is Duel Deck luck or skill?
Skill. Both players hold the identical hand and see every prize, so there's no luck of the draw — only reading your opponent and timing your bids.
Is the committed bid really hidden?
Yes. Online, your chosen card is held by the server and never sent to your opponent until both players have committed, so neither side can peek.
Can I play Duel Deck online?
Yes — play online multiplayer, vs the computer, or pass-and-play on one device, free in your browser.
